Up-and-coming designer Barbara Tfank is rising exceedingly fast as a fashion icon. After receiving her Master’s from Stanford, Tfank decided to dive into the fashion world by accepting an apprenticeship with designer Cesarani. In Tfank’s early career, she dabbled in costume design for major films and television commercials such as Midnight Clear (’92), Dream Lover (’94), and Beautician and the Beast (’97). Since then, she has created red carpet gowns for numerous high profile celebrities such as Uma Thurman.
Barbara Tfank now draws her inspiration from this movie background, as well as other forms of visual art. Tfank’s 2008 Doris Day chic Spring collection, which reflected the look of Anouk Aimee (a 1960’s art house film star) brought to life a very popular and wearable collection. Barbara Tfank’s use of lavish French and Italian brocades, paired with light hues of silver, white, and a dash of rosé pink, embodied this 60’s starlet’s style. Tfank’s flame for her ’08 line was ignited when she came across Fernand Leger’s timeless classic “Three Women” which depicted three nude women, all in dark browns and gray’s, with a backdrop of primary colors. The rounded curvature of the women’s bodies, along with the crisp, straight lines in the painting, reflected Tfank’s fashion collection. Tfank also extracted shades of yellow and other vibrant colors from the painting, to incorporate in her color scheme of clothing—Tfank literally brought the painting to life through her clothes. Mrs. Tfank displayed vivid colors that were framed by a black background, which in turn gave a beautiful silhouette. This line provides an abundance of wool, paired with taffeta and tulle, which seem to play a key part in this collection. This line, and all of her other sought-after collections can be found exclusively at Barneys.
