Judge J Michael Flournoy

J. Michael Flournoy attended Northern Arizona University for a year before transferring to the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor Science in Business Administration with a Personnel Management major in 1959. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, business fraternity. During his time at the University of Arizona, he was selected to honoraries, including the Chain Gang Junior Men's Honorary, Blue Key Senior Men's Honorary, and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (Fijis). He was also elected Senior Class President and served as President of the University Representative Council. Additionally he was vice chairman of the University Student Union Activities Board. He was also a member of the university’s Student Executive Council. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, J. Michael Flournoy enrolled at the University of Arizona College of Law, where he earned a Doctor of Laws (JD) in 1962. Continuing his history of leadership, Flournoy was selected to become a member of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity and served as the University of Arizona chapter's President during the 1961-1962 academic year.

After completing his education, J. Michael Flournoy was admitted to the State Bar of Arizona and served as a partner in the firm Preston, Flournoy & Flick. He was chosen as Coconino County’s first Public Defender and soon thereafter was elected for two terms (8 years) as the Coconino County Attorney until 1976. After 16 years as a sole practitioner of J. Michael Flournoy, P.C., he was elected to the position of Superior Court Judge, Division 1 in Coconino County in 1992. J. Michael Flournoy held this office through three elections, concluding his last term ending in 2002. Since resuming private practice in July 2002, he has served as an attorney on a part-time basis, working mainly in mediation and arbitration on a select number of civil and criminal cases.

In his free time, J. Michael Flournoy enjoys boating at Lake Powell, where he has owned a house boat for nearly 30 years. He also enjoys golfing and has belonged to a number of country clubs over the years, including Coconino Country Club, Canyon Country Club, Continental Country Club, Fairfield Country Club, Forrest Highlands and Aspen Valley Country Club. J. Michael Flournoy supports both the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University Athletics, as well as the Phoenix Suns (43 year season ticket holder) and the Arizona Cardinals (8 year season ticket holder). He currently resides in Flagstaff, Arizona. He is a 73 year resident of Coconino County where Flagstaff is the county seat. Flournoy is a Christian and a member of the Catholic faith. He is a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, having been a member for 49 years. He also is a trained member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
